Jean Pierre Arsenault

Born approximately 1756 in Acadia and died in
Bic , a small town that he founded on the St. Lawrence River .

Below you will find some history about Jean Pierre Arsenault
that was given to me , by one of his descendents . The story was told by her Great-Grandmother , so I kept it the way it was told by her .

The story of this immegrant goes back to the French and Indian War,
Which started in 1754 and ended in 1763 . During this period of time
the English claimed from the French the land known back then as
Acadia (Henry Wardsworth Longfellow in his famous story of Evangeline mentions this place called Acadia and the story is about a woman called Evangeline who escaped the English at this time , because
there was a lot of killing going on . Down in Louisiana , where there was a lot of what we call today Acadains there is quite a bit of history.
These people migrated to there during this time when they were fleeing
from the English . In the encyclopedia it mentions the name of Louis
Arceneaux , which I think could be a brother or some relative of the above person , who we are talking about . Spelling is not the same , but
thru the years spelling in names has changed from the original spelling
who is right and what is the right spelling it is hard to know .

Now the story of Jean Pierre Arsenault , during this invasion by the
English of Acadia there was a young woman who escaped with her
son under her arms . He was just a baby at the time perphaps a year
old from what I can gather . She fled the invasion and was later found in the area of what is now Tracadie . This child of hers was Jean Pierre
he grew up and was told the story of his mothers fleeung Acadia by herself and he later recounted the story to his friend and companion
Joseph Labrie . At a very young age he left his mothers house to become a river boat captain as all young men of that time wanted to became .
One day coming back from Quebec up along the St Lawrence there was a storm . He sought shelter in the home of this Joseph Labrie who lived
there with his family . This Joseph Labrie had a daughter Marie Rosalie
whom Jean Pierre fell in love with and later married on the 4th of
November 1786 . At this time he was roughly 30 years old . They were
married in St. Rock de Quebec .

After his marriage he returned to live near his mother in Tracadie . On
the 10 of May 1790 his first son was born and was named after him
Jean Pierre as well .This Jean Pierre married a Marie Cote on the 5th
of June 1810 , he was about 20 years old when he married . Between
1790 and 1794, the first Jean Pierre founded the town of Bic . On the
5 December 1794 Jean Pierre's other son Clement was baptised at this time , but he died at a young age . So we go along to learn the that Jean
Pierre from about 1790 to 1794 moved out of Tracadie and moved closer
to the St. Lawrence River where he worked as a river boat captain . At
this point and time he cleared land and started a colony which today is
named Bic which he had in his mind to start his own colony of people
at that time . In 1810 he constructed another portion to his house , today
this house is called the Centenary . In the beginning stages the house was only 30 feet by 30 feet , I don't know what it looks like today , but someday I will find out .

After a while he retired being a river boat captain and became a farmer and cleared a large portion of the area around him . He died at 54 in 1810 and is buried in the cemetery in Rimouski . He left a great number of decendants . On going over records we find that he or really the name of Arseneau is all around the area of Bic .

So in recounting all of this we can truly say that Jean Pierre Arsenault was a pioneer and along with Joseph Labrie another pioneer . He founded and helped form what is today Bic , Canada . They went through a lot of hard times at that time amidst poverty and health .That is probably why he died at such a young age . Also it was noted that he was the first to start farming up there with the first handful of grain .
